Description

Emerging pollutants (EPs) can cause serious environmental problems. The removal of EPs from aquatic environments is challenging due to their low biodegradation. However, one effective method for the removal of EPs from aqueous solutions is the use of adsorption techniques, and so the development of novel hybridized adsorbents is a topic of increasing interest.

Novel adsorbents are highly efficient, but to reduce cost are now being developed from materials such as minerals, soil, or clays containing various metal oxides as a low-cost method to remove EPs from aquatic environments. However, to enhance removal efficiency, surface modification or denaturation using different friendly chemicals, such as surfactants and polymers or coating techniques, can be applied. Metal and metal oxide nanomaterials can also be used as novel hybridized adsorbents for water and wastewater treatment. EPs include toxic heavy metals, antibiotics, dyes, pesticides, herbicides, personal care products, and insecticides, among other potentially serious substances. Therefore, the development of novel hybridized adsorbents, coupled with the study of adsorption/desorption, including isotherm, kinetics, interactions, regeneration, thermodynamics, mechanisms and actual case applications, is of great importance.

This Special Issue aims to attract original articles devoted to the synthesis and characterization of metal and metal oxide materials with different surface modifications or coating techniques to form novel adsorbents for the removal of EPs. We also welcome review articles describing all related topics involving metal and metal oxide nanomaterials with applications in adsorption and catalysis.

Potential topics include but are not limited to the following:

  • Synthesis and characterization of novel adsorbents based on metal and metal oxide nanomaterials
  • Adsorption of surfactants or polymers on metal and metal oxide nanomaterials to form hybrid adsorbents for EP removal
  • Nanocomposites and core shell metal oxides for EP removal
  • Metal oxide adsorbents for sample preparation in chemical and food analysis
  • Metal and metal oxide nanomaterials for photocatalytical degradation of EPs
  • Application of metal and metal oxide nanomaterials in EP removal
  • Application of nanocomposites and core shell metal oxides in EP removal
